Quimperlé is a relatively large town where you’ll find all kinds of services and stores. Don’t miss the Friday morning market. Strolls along the beautifully flowered riverbanks towards the daily fish market will take you into the medieval quarter of the town. Kemperle, at the gateway to the Cornouaille region
Quimperlé, or Kemperle in Breton, is a port town in the South Finistère department. On the border with Morbihan and not far from the Atlantic Ocean, this commune of over 12,000 Quimperlois enjoys a dynamic economy. What’s more, its main characteristic is that it is crossed by three rivers: Ellé, Isole and Laïta. This confluence of rivers means that the town is surrounded by water, offering a lovely harbor landscape with quays lined with beautiful stone houses and a flower-bedecked bridge. On these very quays, the city’s port and commercial activities were once in full swing.
A distinction is made between the Basse Ville, a small peninsula surrounded by Ellé and Isole, and the more recent Haute Ville.

Things to do in Quimperlé
The Lower Town: at the heart of religious history
The cradle of the town, it was on this peninsula that the Benedictine abbey of Sainte Croix was founded in the 11th century. This church is famous for its circular Romanesque design and had a very powerful role before gradually losing its power. Nevertheless, it remains a historical witness to its era, and a must-see.
Later, in the 19th century, builders Moreau frères erected Les Halles a stone’s throw from the church. You’re sure to find something to please you in this beautiful indoor market.
La Haute Ville: the dynamic medieval heart of Quimperlé
Beyond the peninsula, the city stretches out on its heights on the other side of the rivers. Other religious monuments include :
- Notre Dame de L’Assomption church
- the Ursuline convent and chapel
- La Chapelle Saint Eutrope
There’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy in the town’s shops and facilities, such as the cinema, conservatory and media library. Throughout the year, you’ll also find a wide range of cultural events that contribute to the town’s dynamism.
